"Ascent" is a welded cor ten sculpture that was commissioned for a corporate setting. This outdoor piece is placed in an open space upon a tapered pedestal to convey a sense of soaring flight. This abstract bird figure appears to be either just lifting off its perch, perhaps in search of something or on the other hand retuning and touching down on the base instead. This piece is deliberately ambiguous about leaving or returning with the intent of conveying a sense of time: before or after.
To create this work, an armature was first developed using solid round bars bent and welded to outline the basic shape. Over this steel armature a skin of weathering steel (cor ten) was formed and welded in place. Over time the color of this work darkens to a rich brown finish that is substantially permanent since the iron oxides on this piece becomes waterproof over a period of time.
