P a t e r s o n Anthony Paterson has been an active and serious artist ever since he was a teenager, studying painting, drawing and sculpture in Mexico. The origins of his original traditions have never left him and the psychological roots continue to be evident in his work. To me it seems that the power of the inner space that lingers between the psyche and the spirit that comes into conflict and sometimes resolution is forcefully expressed in his work. There is a darkness here that may seem ominous but is actually a proclimation of what is....is. There is also an explosive sexual energy that relates to the dynamics of life itself, declaring a reality that exploits the physical connection between body and soul. Containment and repression play against the concept of awakening and freedom but the question unanswered is which is the dominent force. To know this one should perhaps be aware of the works produced by other civilizations, mainly the Incas and Aztecs. Although the works of Anthony Paterson doesn't celebrate the violence it does express the melancholy and maybe even angst to some degree. Of course this is only my reading of this artist's work and may not even be close to his intent. Nevertheless it moves me in this way and the sculptural language he employs influences my reaction. Large or small, all of the works here have a monumental quality about them. Again I believe this stems from his original traditions which has always had a profound influence on this artist.
