The Penobscot
Bay, located on the northern coast of Maine, has been
a source of inspiration to me for a long time. Here
is a place that offers up a look at it's own history and
character through the details of the land and it's people.
Look at the
enormous variety of rocks, so unique to this
region. Reading the signs, they tell you of
another time, other forces that have thrust itself
towards the sun, material alloyed with others.
Honed and polished, sometimes by glaciers, sometimes by
the ocean, stones are crowned with bald heads and
surrounded by minions of polished muted colored eggs. Mineral
hues are patinaed with moss and lichen, homeland
to barnicles, mussels and seaweed from below the tide
line.
However,
the story is different from cove to
cove, bay to bay, so it's difficult to predict the ongoing
tale beforehand. One has to explore the region and
this exploration takes you beyond the physical and possibly
into another realm.
