defining the outline

An offset has been started so the upper shape is slighly lower now than the divided portion beneath.  I'm beginning to sense the direction that I'll be pushing this piece.  For now I'll consider creating three distinct levels and shapes on this first plate.

When starting a new piece such as this, more time is given over to the thought process than the manual.  It's probably not particularly interesting to read about right now.
